The Space
Swapping a peninsula
for an island made
the kitchen feel more
open to the family
room. The cooking
area was moved to
the back wall, which
reduces steps in the
work core and creates
an appealing view into
the kitchen. Access to
the garage, previously
near the refrigerator,
was relocated to a
hallway that contains
a wall oven.

A shelf that bridges two
upper cabinets,

takes advantage of space
above the kitchen sink to
display cookbooks at a
convenient height. It also
neatly trims the granite
backsplash.

The same brushed-
nickel cabinet pulls,

throughout the kitchen
for a streamlined look.
Their shallow-arc styling
echoes the handles on all
the appliances.

The island countertop,

, is made of
mesquite—a particularly
hard wood—that was
cut into blocks to show-
case its end grain and was
assembled mosaic-style
as a solid piece.
